5G Estrategy in Catalonia

The Executive Council has given a green light to the 5G Strategy of Catalonia, coinciding with the celebration of the 14th edition of the Mobile World Congress (MWC).

With this strategy, the Government wants Catalonia to become the capital of 5G. The Executive believes that the country has the capabilities to become a hub of attraction for the technological deployment, services and a new industry associated to the development of the 5G network.

The 5G strategy is based on five axes of action:

  • 5G Infrastructure: accelerating the deployment of infrastructures in an orderly and inclusive way.
  • 5G Ecosystem: promoting a new industry and 5G high-value ecosystem.
  • 5G Innovation: drive for innovation and research.
  • 5G Promotion: Creation of an international reference model.
  • 5G Talent: talent attraction and specialized training.

Mediterranean 5G Corridor

The European Union is configuring what should be the European 5G corridors. Catalonia and Occitania have worked together to prepare the candidature of the 5G corridor of the Mediterranean as one of the priority projects financed by the European Union.

A new industry 5G based on digital innovation

Catalonia currently has research and innovation entities of reference at the international level in terms of 5G. In fact, these centers already participate in 22 of the 37 5G research projects funded by the European Commission. The strategy will allow boosting partnerships between these research and innovation centers and the promotion of creation laboratories in real environments, in key projects such as the connected vehicle, the applied use of dron technology or smart urban solutions (smartcities).

Public Administration also wants to implement 5G technology and will develop cases of innovative uses in areas such as health, emergencies, mobility, logistics or the media, among many others.

The Government promoted an agreement with other administrations, research centers and technology agents to launch the 5G Barcelona initiative, a public-private project that will incorporate new companies and entities in order to create access test areas 5G.
