“Astral” sets sail

The Proactiva Open Arms NGO continues its humanitarian mandate in aid of the refugees who run from the war zones like Siria and who end quietly disappearing in the Mediterranean waters. Entire families and dozens or hundreds of children die by drowning or by the poor conditions that find during whole trip, which can last up to more than a year.

After a year of located work at the Greek island of Lesbos, Proactiva Open Arms has received new support as motorized sailboat for rescue and medical care work.

The “Astral” is a ketch, this is to say a sailboat with two masts and 30 meters of length. It is also equipped with suitable motors for rescue in difficult conditions. It served in the US Navy and was converted as a recreational ship before being partially remodeled for its new mission and given by Livio LoMonaco (owner) to the ONG of Badalona.

eData is intended to give the greatest possible visibility to the effort of this humanitarian organization, which is accomplishing an excellent work and probably superhuman, facing the passivity and connivance of the European States and the other world economic powers in the context that has forced this massive run with the human drama that is involved.
